Service Learning 5-13-09

Today in service learning we did something different than the last time we met. Today we were find ideas that we were going to put in our script for the service learning day. We have about 3 pages of our part of the script done. The ninth and tenth both have to work with the same script but the eleventh graders have to write their own section because they were the ones who first started the tutoring group so they have the years they did something and then when we came into the group.

Of Mice and Men Literary Exam

Of Mice and Men Literary Exam

Between the Line Questions

1. What did the puppy represent in the book
The puppy represented new life. The puppy meant new beginning or strength. Although the puppy was meant new life Lennie killed the puppy just like the mice before the puppy. Just as quickly as the new life was brought into the world it was destroyed by this kind but negative power force. The puppy also represented a person starting fresh from their old life and how in can be crushed in a matter of seconds.

2. Why do George and Lennie keep moving from place to place?
George and Lennie are always getting into some trouble or they just have to keep moving because of whatever reason that comes up. Like they said “they work up a stake in a town and spend their stake in another town. Sometimes Lennie would get into with women. Lennie got into trouble with a girl with a red dress because he wanted to feel the dress. A mob coming after him almost lynched Lennie, making him and George have to leave town again.

3. Would Lennie be able to survive without George?
I don’t think Lennie would e able to survive without George. No one else would want to take time out of their own life to care for such a huge mentally challenged man in that time period. Lennie would be neglected because he’s weird. He likes to fell every soft thing he sees. Lennie isn’t the smartest person but he’s very dumb.

4. Is George and Lennie’s relationship more symbiotic or parasite?
George and Lennie relationship is more symbiotic because there just two people who are almost inseparable. George is the brains of their operation and Lennie is the brawn. They both need each other. George needs Lennie because of his size and he gets jobs done quick and with quality. Lennie needs George because George is that guide he’s like that rabbit that Lennie is following.

5. Is George benefiting from Lennie because of his tremendous size?
George is benefiting from Lennie’s size. Without Lennie George wouldn’t be able to get the money that he gets while he’s with Lennie because they each get paid separately. Both of their pay together gives them double what each of them separately would get. George might be benefiting but he still takes care of Lennie like and older brother because Lennie wouldn’t know what to do with the money.

6. Does Lennie and George need each other?
George and Lennie need each other, they are like a non-gay completion of each other. George needs Lennie because he does most of the hard working jobs that take a lot of labor. Lennie need George because he manages Lennie and doesn’t listen to anyone but George. I don’t think anyone would care for Lennie the way George does because of the connection between them.

What comparisons and different attributes - George and Lennie have compared to Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade of “The Outsiders”?

George and Lennie are somewhat like Dally and Johnny Cade. George is like Dally because, Dally is like the brains but not really but he is according to Johnny. Lennie is like Johnny because everything he does goes wrong some way and that ended up for the both of them losing their lives. Johnny’s death not so drastic like Lennie’s death but they both died. Some different things about the four is Lennie always listens to every word that George says without question but Johnny is smarter and he would question Dally’s judgment on things that he doesn’t understand

George and Lennie are like brothers. Lennie is guided by George because He’s mentally ill but he is enormous in size and George uses that to his own advantage. George provides for Lennie because Lennie has the brain function of a six year old boy. George takes time out of his life to care for Lennie because no one would care for Lennie at that time in America because of his size. When Lennie went to go feel the girls’ red dress the girl screamed and Lennie got scared and held on to the dress. If George weren’t their Lennie would have been lynched. Like George Dallas Winston cared for Johnny Cade just in a tough way. Johnny looked up to Dallas like a younger brother looked up to an older brother. Johnny listened to everything Dallas said like Lennie. Johnny wanted to be like Dallas a little. Dallas was a hoodlum with a long criminal record.

George always wants Lennie to listen to him so they would stay out of trouble with other people. Dallas is trying to turn Johnny from acting like a punk who is afraid of a fight to a hardened hoodlum like him. Johnny sometimes doesn’t listen to Dallas because some things Dallas does Johnny doesn’t agree with. Lennie would never dare to go against whatever George told him to do. The connection between George and Lennie is more in depth than Dallas and Johnny.

George and Lennie have similar and different characteristics as Dallas and Johnny Cade. The four all had things that affected their lively hood. Dally tried to his life around in the end but a dream can be crushed in five seconds as we read in the book Of Mice and Men

1.In schooling, should students be grouped homogeneously (same personality, backgrounds, skills) or heterogeneously (different personalities, abilities, cultures)? Why?
I don't think that is for the school to decide. It is the students decision to group with any type of personality whether it would be an Artisan with a Rational it doesn't matter because it is the way someone feels not what ideology says about that persons' personality and what person think of that person.

2.Do opposites attract, or is it easier to have relationships with your own type? Explain.
I think opposites can attract, people is you are out on the street and you never met the person and they are the total opposite of you and you are this fun loving person who doesn't care a thing in the world and this other person is opposite of you and they are very uptight and focused on their world and the two are attracted to each other it's like a completion of of the both of the two one person is tons of fun and the other is no fun at all it works like a magnet opposites attract.

Why is our school sharing sports teams with other schools (Specifically Football)?

Our school Constitution high school has been sharing sports teams for the three years this school has been open. I have played for those teams for two out of the three years that we been with the other schools. Our football team is shared with the high school Benjamin Franklin for all of the three years. Two years our school has been with Boddine high school with our basketball team, the varsity team so it is hard to try to start even if you are really good. Playing football is the same; the coaches only start their own people from their own original school with the exception of Marquese White and Daivon Jackson. Those two start for Ben Franklin varsity team. Many complaints like that have come from other students in our school like 9th grade John. Constitutions high school needs our own football teams but people worry about the size of the people in school and the number of people in our school. Is our school big enough to start our own football team, the size of our people and the number of students inside of our school? One answer from someone was “yes and no because our school isn’t big in size we have a few wide people but we would be a junior varsity team unless we get some huge new 9th graders and our numbers are mo problem in terms of having our own football team

Interviewing many people, I’ve found that many people feel very strongly about having our own football team. I’ve interview 9th grade John and he said, “he doesn’t agree with our school’s decision to link with other high schools.” John feels that the other schools are benefiting off of our talent as we progress and get better as we go along the way and get better. John thinks said, “Our school says they have a lot of money but when it comes time we say we want to do something with the money they say we don’t have enough money.” This school says that we are supposed to have our own teams and everything but we are playing with other schools still after the brochures to this schools lies to the students that look at it. Hassaan Cooper was another person interview by me and he said, “ Our school is supposed to have a lot of money but we can’t afford to get our own football team and I don’t like playing for another school. Playing for another school we don’t get any recognition if we are playing for different high schools. People interviewed in this passage are those who don’t agree with playing for another school and think we should have our own teams. Questioning some other people they say they don’t mind playing for another school, but if we had our own team would be better than what we are dealing with now. Dominique Gibson of the 10th grade says, “I don’t mind playing for another school but playing for our own school would be super cool. Having our own team would bring a lot of new skills to our school like leadership, and time management skills. Marquese White says, “I don’t mind playing for another school as long as he starts on every game.” Principal Dr. Davidson was the last person who I interviewed but he says why would we get our own football team when we already play for this one so he doesn’t agree with my plan of our own team. Principal Dr. Davidson says, “It’s better that we have a team to play on than no team at all.” I had to agree with because that is true I’d rather play on a team than no team at all. Dr. Davidson said it all so I stopped right there and ended my mission for our own school football team.

The Civil War effect on the Soldiers

The Civil War effect on the Soldiers

The Civil war greatly affected the lives of soldiers emotionally and physically. Over 620,000 men died and an equal number maimed or wounded. The Union soldiers not only sacrificing their lives for a free nation but so their country would be an undivided nation that would be peaceful. The Confederate soldiers claimed they weren’t fighting to keep slavery but to be their own nation within a nation already established. The Union soldiers had a very big upper hand because they were more supplied than the Confederate soldiers because factories were in the North and the rural parts of the U.S was in the South. Soldiers had a long between battles close to 50 to 60 days before the next battle. The soldiers would do different activities to make to fly by quickly. Soldiers played the biggest role in the outcome of the war. Was it the Union indecisiveness that almost lost them the war or, the Confederate’s daring General Lee that lost the war?

Fighting for freedom of slaves in the south the Union waged war against the Confederacy. The Union was an organized army but they weren’t very tactical. Union soldiers would die so quickly because they would walk right into these new and improved rifled muskets. Instead of finding different ways to fight the Confederacy they used the same tactic used to fight the British but that was when the muskets bullet were not rifled and the bullets would not go straight all the time. The Confederate was smart enough not to use this tactic that made them very dangerous because they would take coverage when firing on the Union. The Union would still walk right into the bullets and General Lee knew this. The Confederacy had ruthless commanders such as Thomas Jonathan “Stone Wall” Jackson. He was the scorn of the Union and the one of the major causes of the Confederate winning the first Battle of Bull Run. The Confederacy were losing the battle, they were pushed to Confederate resistance with Gen. Thomas “Stone Wall” Jackson. “Stone Wall” Jackson and his unit pushed the Union back and they won the Battle of Bull Run. The Union also had very good Generals such as Ulysses S. Grant. He was symbol of Union victory during the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant was a general over brigadier volunteers. He did much for the Union; he led his unit to take Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson. When the Confederate commander asked for terms Gen. Grant replied, “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.” The Confederates surrendered, so President Lincoln promoted Grant to major general of volunteers. Generals like Thomas “Stone Wall” Jackson of the Confederacy and Ulysses S. Grant of the Union greatly affected the soldiers by giving them hope for both sides when everything seemed to be going wrong or made them feel great when everything was going the right way. Whether that hope was for a negative cause or a positive cause.

Soldiers in the Civil War had a lot of time to deal with between battles. The soldiers would have at least 50 to 60 days between battles. Both the Union and the Confederate soldiers would do similar activities to make time fly by to try and avoid boredom. The soldiers would write letters to their family members, play cards, baseball, talk about baseball, do different drills, or sometimes just rest and sleep to relieve the pressure and the stress of being at war with their brother. One letter from Confederate soldier John P. Nugent to his mother said, “ I had to travel 500 miles barefoot my feet were so sore that I could hardly walk, one of them had 13 blisters under the bottom it was a trying time with the men we marched over twelve hundred miles you can hardly think how poor men looked. Twenty miles a day barefoot and hardly clothed enough to cover their nakedness; I am not in very good health. I would like very much to go home to see you but they the general will not allow any one to have furlough. Our company that left with one hundred twelve men is no reduced to forty-seven. A few words from John P. Nugent and how war is affecting him and what the war is like fighting for the Confederacy. When the soldiers would get out of camp to march and fight, physical hardship replaced boredom and the temptations of camp life. The long marches with full equipment, heat, sun, dust, insects, cold, rain, mud, short rations, equipment failure, and many other plagues of nature took a great toll on the soldiers to add to their miseries. Soldiers would report back to tell that the weather was intensely cold and men were frostbitten, one man was frozen to death and maybe many after that. These conditions were just some of the plagues that hit the Confederacy. The Union had to face many problems of their own but some them are nothing compared to what the Confederacy had to go through. Union soldier George W. Tillotson wrote a letter to his wife and the letter sounded a lot more pleasant than the Confederate soldier John P. Nugent’s’ letter. George’s letter read as the following, “Our living is simple, we have plenty of hard crackers, I keep a box of them up on my bunk all the while for the tent and deal them out as they want them. We have plenty of salt pork, bacon, and beef there has been a lot of fat cattle brought here which the butcher so as to have fresh beef twice a week but all the rest may eat it if they are a mind to but dastent. We get a kind of conglomerated vegetables composed of all sorts of vegetables boiled mixed up together and dried for soup. They have built a bakery so that anyone can use it to bake whatever they want.” Those are the words of a Union soldier to his wife. The Union soldiers seem to be having some of the best time of their lives while on the 50 to 60 days off between battles. When all the good times end the Union soldiers are confronted by the realities of camp life they are plagued with fervor that weakens them when time for battle. The Union soldiers like the Confederate soldiers had to do constant routine drills and other duties. The men dealt with poor food, sickness, restlessness, and character flaws with their fellow soldiers. Food was monotonous and sometimes stale or bug infested. George W. Tillotson wrote to his wife the food he was eating in a great amount of detail. George described conditions that many other men fighting along at his side did not get out of fighting and working.

The Civil War was a war that should have been won by the Union in the second year of the war, but the indecisiveness of Union General George McClellan almost caused the Union to lose the war. General McClellan was the general of all the Northern armies. He was a great organizer but he was indecisive when it was time to attack the Confederacy. McClellan intercepted a very important letter from the Confederacy but he failed to react to the letter by waiting. By the time he was starting to form a plan around the letter General Lee had already found out what happened and he prepared himself and his army for whatever the Union was going to do. General McClellan devised a plan to come go around the Confederacy but it didn’t work out how he wanted it to. McClellan’s plan flopped because he failed to act early on and attack the Confederacy. The battle of Antietam decided how much longer the war would continue. On the 59th minute of the 11th hour the Confederacy attacked the Union at this certain time in the battle of Antietam, which allow the war to continue for another two years. Twelve thousand four hundred ten Union soldiers were killed and 10,700 confederate soldiers were killed. The battle of Antietam was an undecided battle as to who was the victor. Abraham Lincoln released General McClellan as the General of the Union army. Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation after the battle of Antietam. Many slaves were freed by the Emancipation. Soon after the Union won the war at the battle of Gettysburg. The Confederacy lost the Civil War because they were running out of supplies and because of their daring general, Robert Edward Lee. The soldiers played the most important role in war because the soldiers run out of supplies and the Confederacy falls to the Union army.

The soldiers of the Civil War played the most important roles. The Civil War affected them the most physically and mentally. Over 620,000 died for their cause good or bad they sacrificed their lives. Even though the Union had a greater cause the Confederacy are still their brothers in arms against them. The Union soldiers risked their lives for a free undivided nation. The Confederacy claimed to be fighting for their independence but they know it was for the cause of slavery. The Civil War the bloodiest war in American history, fighting so that our nation would be united.

I make Poem

I make my proud when she sees me smile.
I make my mom-mom worry when there's no reason to worry.
I make muscle when I go to the YMCA so that one day I'll make the front page of Sports Illustrator magazine.
I make my cousins feel loved and not give a damn about peer presure.
I make people mad when I don't give a damn about their feelings toward me.
I make pancakes for my breakfast only on Tuesday.
I make my father jealous of the life I live because he regrets his.
I make him feel like a loser.
I'm not a poet but America allows me to express myself

Peom Essay The Whipping by Robert Hayden

When was your last whipping? Did you run from your mom and call her a fataxx, my friend did and he paid for it. Robert Hayden writing the poem called The Whipping a very memorable poem, tears like rainy weather to those wound like memories from The Whipping. Robert Hayden in writing the poem The Whipping it was very realistic, it gave me an image of something I’d seen before. I thought The Whipping was very funny from the description of what the woman and the boy went through just to whip the boy.

One relation I could make in this poem was the reality of it. The reality of this poem brings out the image of the boy being whipped. Children run form a beating all the time like in the poem it reads, “Wildly he crashes through elephant ears pleads in dusty zinnias. The reality of the poem, kids always gets whipped. Unfortunately the woman in the was most likely beating the boy for no reason in the end because the poem read the woman was by a tree purging because of her own insecurities that were apparently not dealt with in her past.

Poetry of this type can give the reader a very particular image that the poet wants you to see when reading the poem. One image I could picture was the boy being chased around and beat by the woman. I pictured a time when I saw something somewhat like the poem The Whipping except his mother didn’t catch the boy until he got into the house. A boy running from his mom on my block told his mom while he was running “ha ha you can’t catch me fataxx.” The boy running “ Wildly he crashes into elephant ears,” “the woman corners him, she strikes the shrilly circling boy till the stick breaks in her hand.” His tears are like rainy weather to wound like

Whipping by Robert Hayden was very hilarious. Him running from the woman reminded me of a boy I saw running from his mom and yelled out “you can’t catch me fataxx.” Reading this poem The Whipping was funny in the way Robert Hayden used his wording like in the quote “In spite of rippling fat pursues and corners him.”

Final whipping, finally you become too old for a whipping anymore. Many tears like rainy weather to those wound like memories from The Whipping. How did you fell when you were whipped, if you were whipped? A poem to think about The Whipping by Robert Hayden.
